From Village Lanes to City Streets
South Street, c. 1860. The current location of Seward Park is at the left. South Street has long been one of the more stately residential sections of Auburn. Even in the 1860s, however, goats were not a normal mode of transportation.
A balloon launch, c. 1860s - 1880. Genesee Street has always been a focus for community activity, balloon launches being among the more unusual events to take place.
The North Street business distict, c. 1870s. Both Genesee and North Streets were functioning thoroughfares in Auburn by 1794, just two years after the city was founded. As Auburn grew from a quiet tree-lined town to a bustling industrial center, Genesee Steet and the streets with which it intersected became the primary locations of business and commerce.
A bird's-eye view of Auburn in the early twentieth century. The old post office building is in the foreground at left. St Mary's Catholic Church is visible at the right.
Harsh winters are certainly a fact of life in Auburn, as can be seen in this photograph of North Street taken on January 30, 1925.
